Yaduveer Krishnadatta Wadiyar of the erstwhile Mysore royal family has replaced sitting MP Pratap Simha as the BJP candidate from the Mysore seat for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP on Wednesday released its second list of 72 candidates for the April-May Lok Sabha elections.
Dropout percentage increase in BJPs ahead Loksabha elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday released the second list of 72 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, naming 267 candidates so far.
Nearly 21% of sitting MPs have not been repeated from their respective constituencies, reported notable media platform.
List 1 & 2 shows major setback for few MPs
In the first list, only 33 MPs were replaced out of 195 candidates named, while in the second list of 72 names, 30 MPs were replaced. Overall, 140 sitting MPs have been repeated, and 67 have not been given tickets, including two who opted not to contest.
The second list includes 20 candidates each from Maharashtra and Karnataka, seven from Gujarat, six each from Telangana and Haryana, five from Madhya Pradesh, two each from Delhi, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and one each from Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
National capital Delhi saw major setback ahead polls
In the national capital, the party changed all but one sitting MP – Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi. Five of the six MPs who were dropped this time – Harsh Vardhan, Meenakshi Lekhi, Pravesh Sahib Singh, and Ramesh Bidhuri – have been holding their seats since 2014.
Pratap Simha BJP leader who issued passes to Parliament intruders dropped too
Notably, the ruling party dropped Pratap Simha, the sitting MP from Karnataka’s Mysore seat, and fielded Mysuru royal scion Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja from the seat.
Pratap Simha was at the centre of a controversy last year after two intruders jumped into the chambers of Lok Sabha from the visitor’s gallery on December 13 when India remembered the horrific terrorist attack on Parliament in 2001.
Talking to reporters Tuesday, Simha, in an apparent dig at Wadiyar, said he was “proud” that the Mysore royal “wishes to live with ordinary citizens (as their representative) rather than being inside an air-conditioned room as a king”.
The intruders, who raised slogans and released yellow smoke through canisters, were issued authorisation passes by Pratap Simha.
The visitor passes of Mysore-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha were used by protesters in the Parliament security breach case; Sadananda Gowda says there was no question of replacing him.
Mangalore MP & State president statement
Mangalore MP and former BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel, who has represented the constituency thrice since 2019, is among those likely to be left out, as per sources, with the party looking to bring in a new face for Mangalore.
Kateel said he welcomed the possibility of a new candidate who, as per speculation, could be BJP state secretary Captain Brijesh Chowta.
After the loss in the state polls held in May 2023, Kateel was replaced with BY Vijayendra as the state BJP chief.
Vijayendra’s was said to have been elevated to revitalise the Lingayats, the core base of the BJP in the state.
