Ajit Doval, the former IPS officer, has been reappointed as the National Security Adviser (NSA) by the Indian government for a third term.

Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor

Doval was a 1968-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer before retiring as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) director in 2005. He will still be in charge of intelligence, military matters, and national security. After Modi took office as prime minister in May 2014, he was named the NSA, a position he was reappointed to January 2019.

Ajit Doval and PM Modi

Doval serves as the PM’s liaison with the P5 nations—the US, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom—as well as the local community.
His expertise as a spymaster includes serving in Pakistan. During the Chinese army’s escalation in East Ladakh in 2020 and the Doklam plateau in 2017, he served as the PM’s point person. In addition, he serves as the special envoy of New Delhi in the dispute over India’s boundary with China.

Ajit Doval’s reappointment as the National Security Advisor of India indicates his proven track record, unwavering commitment, and deep understanding of the country’s strategic interests and security challenges. This, in turn, prepares India to navigate through emerging geopolitical threats such as China’s rise, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ajit Doval’s re-appointment as National Security Advisor (NSA) for a third term has significant implications for India’s security posture:

Continuity and Stability: With Ajit’s tenure spanning over a decade, his re-appointment ensures continuity in India’s security policies. Stability in leadership is crucial for effective decision-making and long-term planning.

Strategic Vision: Ajit is known for his strategic acumen. His deep understanding of security challenges, both internal and external, allows him to formulate comprehensive strategies. His continued presence provides stability to India’s security vision.

Counter-terrorism Efforts: India faces persistent threats from terrorism, both domestically and across its borders. Doval’s experience in counter-terrorism operations and intelligence gathering is invaluable. His re-appointment reinforces the government’s commitment to tackling terrorism effectively.

Regional Dynamics: As tensions persist with neighboring countries (such as China and Pakistan), Ajit’s expertise in regional dynamics becomes crucial. His diplomatic skills and ability to navigate complex relationships contribute to India’s security posture.

Cross-border Threats: India deals with cross-border infiltration, cyber threats, and proxy warfare. Doval’s focus on intelligence-sharing, border management, and preemptive actions enhances India’s preparedness.

Geopolitical Challenges: The evolving global geopolitical landscape demands a proactive approach. Doval’s role extends beyond national borders, influencing India’s stance on international security issues.

Ajit Doval, India’s longest-serving National Security Advisor (NSA), has been involved in several significant counterterrorism operations:

Operation Black Thunder (1988):

  • Ajit Doval led this operation against Khalistani terrorists who had taken control of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The operation successfully flushed out the militants and restored control of the temple to the authorities.

Rescue of Indian Nationals in Iraq (2015):

  • During the ISIS crisis in Iraq, Ajit Doval played a crucial role in coordinating efforts to rescue 46 Indian nationals who were trapped in conflict zones. His strategic acumen and diplomatic skills were instrumental in ensuring their safe return.

Counter-insurgency Operations in Nagaland (2015):

  • In collaboration with the Indian Army, Ajit Doval led an operation against Naga militants in the state of Nagaland. His expertise in intelligence-driven operations contributed to the successful neutralization of threats.

Sabotaging the Popular Front of India (PFI):

  • Ajit Doval has been involved in efforts to counter the activities of the Popular Front of India, an organization accused of promoting radicalization and extremism. His work in this area remains classified but underscores his commitment to national security.

These operations demonstrate Doval’s strategic thinking, crisis management skills, and dedication to safeguarding India against terrorist threats. His leadership has been pivotal in shaping India’s security policies and responses.
