Foxconn in Chennai has been forced to shut down production amid heavy rains caused by the cyclone. Foxconn has reportedly decided to resume production by Tuesday, but if the weather continues to worsen, the resumption of production will be delayed.
When Foxconn start Manufacturing iPhone in chennai?
Foxconn, aka Hon Hai Precision Industry, produces electric products for famous multinational companies. In one word, It is the world’s largest contract manufacturer of electronics.
Since August, Apple’s supplier Foxconn has started production of the iPhone 15 at its manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu.The company aims to move closer to parity between India and China in terms of shipments.
Why did Foxconn stop production?
Work was going on vigorously for 4 months at the Chennai unit. But already, a terrible form of nature has emerged. Most of Chennai is submerged due to heavy rains under the influence of ‘Michaung’, which has turned into a severe cyclonic storm. Eight people have already died, and the airport has remained closed till December 5 morning as floods inundated low-lying areas of Chennai.
If this continues, the situation is expected to become more dire. Cyclone “Maichaung” over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved N-NW at a speed of 12 km in the last 6 hours off the coast of South Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu on December 4.
It made landfall in the higher reaches of Chennai on the coast of South Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, Cyclone Michaung brought strong winds and torrential rains that lashed the city. As a result, drainage in waterlogged Chennai is facing new challenges. The Tamil Nadu government has appealed to private sector organizations to allow their employees to work from home as much as possible.
The Taiwan-based company employed about 35,000 people at its Chennai facility. Bringing workers to work in these terrible conditions is very risky. Manufacturing electronics in natural disasters is dangerous enough. In such a situation, Foxconn, the Taiwanese company responsible for manufacturing Apple iPhones, has temporarily stopped production at its facility near Chennai, India.
Government Measures
All educational institutions in Chennai have been closed on Tuesday, as announced by the Tamil Nadu government.
East Coast Railway (Ecor) has taken precautionary measures by canceling a total of 60 trains under its jurisdiction.
33 flights from Chennai have been diverted. In light of incessant rain, a total of 70 flights were canceled from Chennai airport.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has issued an appeal to the residents of Tamil Nadu to stay indoors till the storm subsides.
12 Madras units of the Indian Army are carrying out rescue operations in Mugalivakkam and Manapakkam areas of Chennai.
