Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Akshay Kumar are in big trouble for endorsing gutkha advertisement. Three Bollywood superstars got caught in legal complications.
Earlier, Ajay was seen in the advertisements of this company. Shahrukh and Akshay also followed the same ad. Fans are upset to see popular superstars advertising tobacco products like gutkha, which are harmful to health. Many people feel that their work on Gutkha products can have a negative impact on society, as a larger audience often follows a superstar.
This time, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued a notice to these three stars. The bench fixed the next hearing of the case for May 9 of next year.
Contempt of the law
Even though there is no ban on the sale of tobacco products, the central government has maintained a lot of strict rules regarding the advertisement of these products. There are also allegations that Shah Rukh khan , Ajay Devgn, and Akshay Kumar are violating the law by promoting Gutkha advertisements.
A lawyer emphasized that the presence of stars in this type of advertisement is not desirable. It will have a bad effect on society.
Akshay Kumar had earlier stated that he would no longer campaign the Tobacco ad. But this year, these three Bollywood stars are seen promoting for a famous gutkha company. These Padma shri-honored stars have been repeatedly trolled for advertising Tobacco products.
The allegation and Court’s decision on Gutkha Ads
Advocate Motilal Yadav filed a petition against celebrities, especially ‘Padma shri awardees’ advertising and promoting tobacco products. He submitted in the petition that these cash products are injurious to public health.
In response to the contempt petition, the central government told the Lucknow bench in Allahabad that it had issued notices to Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn for promoting gutkha companies.
The petitioner’s lawyer informed the government about the whole matter in October.
Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey told the bench of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan that actors Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgan had been issued show cause notices on October 20.
He urged the court to dismiss the petition, citing that the Supreme Court is also addressing the matter.
Consequently, the court directed that at a later date, the legal representative of the Union of India and the petitioner-advocate would update the court about the current status of any proceedings before the Supreme Court.
The court also directed them to provide information on any steps taken to comply with the orders already issued by the apex court, as these orders are related to the petitioner’s Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Division Bench of the High Court. This contempt petition may be finally decided after taking cognizance of the above developments.
