Iranian President Ebrahim Raisolsadati has embarked on a three-day official visit to Pakistan, commencing today – 22 April, 2024. Accompanied by a robust delegation including the Iranian Foreign Minister and key cabinet members, President Raisi’s visit aims to boost diplomatic relations, enhance economic cooperation and address regional security concerns.
Meetings and Agenda
President Raisi will engage in a series of high-level meetings with Pakistan’s top leadership, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. The agenda for these discussions encompasses trade, connectivity, energy, agriculture and people-to-people contacts. Additionally, the leaders will deliberate on strategies to combat terrorism, a common threat faced by both Iran and Pakistan.
Political Context
The visit marks the first official interaction between heads of state following Pakistan’s general elections in February, 2024. The visit also takes place amidst escalating tensions in West Asia, with recent incidents between Iran and Israel raising global concerns.
Key Destinations
Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad are key destinations on Raisi’s itinerary during the latter part of his visit. In Karachi, he will meet with Chief Minister and Governor of Sindh, while also paying homage at the mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Notably, the Commissioner of Karachi has declared a public holiday for the city in honour of President Raisi’s visit, with all private and government offices as well as educational institutions remaining closed as per the notification issued.

Past Tensions
The visit comes at a critical point, following cross-border strikes earlier this year that heightened tensions between Pakistan and Iran. In January, tit-for-tat missile strikes across the Balochistan border region resulted in strained relations, with both states accusing each other of harbouring militants. However, swift efforts to de-escalate tensions have, indeed, led to Raisi’s visit.
Pakistani-Iranian Economic Collaboration
One area of mutual interest likely to be discussed during President Raisi’s visit is the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, aimed at addressing Pakistan’s long-standing energy crisis. Despite previous setbacks due to international sanctions, both states seem to express a commitment to reviving the project.
