Following the milestone success of “Barbie,” the toy company is ready to bring another iconic doll line to the big screen.
Mattel announced on December 13 that it is in the very early stages of developing a live-action film based on its beloved American Girl doll collection.
According to the company, The “American Girl” project will be a collaborative effort between Mattel Films, Paramount Pictures, and Temple Hill Entertainment, which produced hit films like”Twilight” and “The Fault in Our Stars”.
Lindsey Anderson Bear, praised for her work on “Pet Cemetery: Bloodlines,” will write the script and produce the upcoming film.
In addition to American Girl, Mattel Films is developing about 14 live-action films, including Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot, and movies based on UNO.
‘In a real and compelling way’
“Saturday Night Live” has already spoofed an American Girl Doll movie. In April, the NBC sketch comedy show aired a parody trailer starring Ana de Armas that brought a handful of American Girl dolls from different eras of history into the modern day.
Mattel partnered with MGM on an “American Girl” movie in 2019, but those plans fell through. More than 32 million American Girl dolls have been sold since they were first introduced in 1986.
“These are historically accurate toys and accessories that are uniquely suited to bring rich and immersive backstories to the screen”.
Bear said that she’s excited to tell a story that tackles childhood issues in a real and compelling way.
