Microsoft is set to invest $2.2 billion in new cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Malaysia. This marks the largest investment in Microsoft’s 32-year history in the state.

The announcement was made by Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Narayana Nadella during the “Microsoft Build: AI Day.” Nadella stated that this investment will include building cloud and AI infrastructure and creating AI-skilling opportunities for 200000 individuals. He said, “We are committed to supporting Malaysia’s AI transformation and ensure it benefits all Malaysians.”
Collaboration with National Cyber Security Agency
Microsoft will collaborate with the National Cyber Security Agency of Malaysia (NACSA) through the Perisai Siber (Cyber Shield) initiative. This aims to improve the state’s cybersecurity capabilities by promoting security in the public sector through security assessments and capacity building.
Microsoft’s Bersama Malaysia Initiative
Microsoft’s investment builds upon its Bersama Malaysia initiative announced in 2021, focusing on inclusive economic growth. The company plans to establish a national AI Centre of Excellence to drive AI adoption across key industries and ensure AI governance and regulation.
Broader Goals
The investment also aligns with Microsoft’s broader aim for AI development globally. Nadella also announced a $1.7 billion investment in Indonesia and revealed plans to build a data centre region in Thailand.

Microsoft aims to provide AI training to 2.5 million people across ASEAN countries by 2025.
Government and Executive Support
Government ministers and Microsoft executives have expressed their support and enthusiasm for the investment.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim, who met Nadella, expressed that this investment would play a crucial role in enhancing Malaysia’s AI capacity. The investment will not only focus on infrastructure development but also on skilling and cybersecurity development.
Mohd. Rafizi bin Ramli, Minister of Economy, praised Microsoft’s investment as a catalyst for economic growth, particularly in the startup sector. Ministers Gobind Singh Deo, Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohamed Fadzil and Chang Lih Kang shared the sentiment.
Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia, emphasized the company’s commitment to building a strong digital ecosystem in Malaysia. Si highlighted Microsoft’s role as a “trusted technology partner,” dedicated to driving innovation and enhancing cybersecurity capabilities for Malaysian organizations.
Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), lauded Microsoft’s investment as a proof of Malaysia’s growing reputation as a tech-investment destination.
