Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been shot and wounded and is in a life-threatening condition.
On Wednesday, Mr Fico was shot while greeting crowds in front of a cultural community centre in the town of Handlova, Slovakia, after a government meeting. He was rushed to a hospital after an assassination attempt by an unidentified gunman. The suspect is under police custody.
According to a post on his Facebook profile, Rober Fico’s condition remains critical.
The conservation Populist leader
Robert Fico belongs to the SMER-Social Democracy party. After five years in opposition, Fico’s party won parliamentary elections last year on a pro-Russian and anti-American platform. He vowed to bring an end to Slovakia providing Ukraine with military support as it battled Russia’s full-scale invasion, and has argued that NATO and the United States provoked Moscow into war.
Putin wishes speedy recovery
Fico, four-time prime minister and a political veteran – accused of swaying his country’s foreign policy in favour of the Kremlin – is battling life-threatening wounds in hospital after being shot multiple times.
While wishing Fico “a speedy and full recovery,” Putin said there can be no justification for this “monstrous crime.”
A statement posted on Fico’s official Facebook page and his party’s website called the attack “an assassination attempt.”
Many Global leaders have expressed shock on this lethal attack and condemn the incidence, stressing that violence can never be justified.
