There have been several reports lately regarding a possible agreement between Apple and OpenAI for new AI-powered capabilities for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.
However, according to a 9To5Mac report that referenced The Information, Apple has been testing OpenAI’s GPT model internally for its virtual assistant Siri since last year. It further notes that since mid-2023, talks have been ongoing between Apple and Microsoft-backed OpenAI.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, reportedly had conversations with Apple staff members working in the machine learning division of the corporation during the June Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) of the previous year. Apple and Altman apparently came to an arrangement for Apple to use OpenAI’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for internal testing, while details of the conversations remain unclear.
A possible agreement between OpenAI and Apple to develop new artificial intelligence powered Using the AI model underlying OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Apple has internally integrated Siri to create a new virtual assistant prototype that was able to handle and analyze far more complicated inquiries and more precisely comprehend the context behind an input. When 9To5Mac revealed that the initial beta of iOS 17.4 included “a new Siri summarization private framework that makes calls to the OpenAI’s ChatGPT API,” it provided evidence of this.
It is expected that Apple will formally announce the agreement during the forthcoming WWDC 2024, which takes place on June 10. New AI capabilities and features are anticipated for its next-generation operating system for MacBooks, iPads, and iPhones.
Notably, Apple was working on its own Ajax AI model for iPhones for on-device text analysis, smart replies and summaries. After using the AI tech by ChatGPT-maker, iPhones will be able to analyse longer bodies of text, image generation and similar demanding texts.
This enhanced Siri is capable of handling more complex queries and understanding context more accurately.
Siri made its debut as an integrated iPhone feature on the iPhone 4S, and the voice assistant has been with us ever since.
OpenAI’s GPT model also powers Microsoft’s Copilot AI features, and a deal with Apple could put the two tech giants in direct competition.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed concern about the integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s Siri in the upcoming iOS 18 update. Reportedly, ChatGPT is a powerful language model developed by OpenAI, a US-based AI research company. Integrating ChatGPT into Siri could potentially make Apple’s virtual assistant more advanced and capable of handling more complex queries.
iOS 18 with Siri AI features
Apart from the ChatGPT integration, several iPhone apps such as Siri, Photos, Apple Music, Note and others are expected to get an AI overhaul with upcoming iOS 18 updates. As of now, it was rumored that the Notes app will have the ability to summarize, spell check and grammar. Additionally, all the AI features are expected to be powered by an on-device large language model (LLM). More about the iOS 18 AI features will be revealed at the WWDC event.
Apple has been working on integrating ChatGPT with Siri, its popular virtual assistant since 2023, according to a recent report. The integration aims to enhance the functionality and user experience of Siri by leveraging the advanced language processing capabilities of ChatGPT. Siri has been a key component of Apple’s product offerings for several years, and its integration with ChatGPT could potentially strengthen its position as a major player in the virtual assistant market.
