Spain is preparing to unveil porn passport, a smartphone application designed to prevent children from accessing pornographic content.
This tool, dubbed the “porn passport,” will allow legal individuals to browse pornographic information without being traced, while preventing children from doing the same.
This move comes in Spain in response to concerns raised by the anti-pornography group Dale Una Vuelta about the alarming rates of pornography consumption among minors.
According to reports, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain, has described the situation as “devastating,” noting that nearly half of adolescents under the age of 15 had been exposed to obscene information.
Pilar Alegria, Spain government’s spokesperson, welcomed the new app as a trailblazer in Europe, stressing that similar efforts are planned across the EU by 2027.
What is the porn passport?
The ‘porn passport’ initiative is part of the Spanish government’s new Digital Wallet app. Officially called the Digital Wallet Beta (Cartera Digital Beta), the app will allow internet platforms to check whether a person viewing pornography is of legal age.
How will this work?
Starting later this summer in Spain, porn watchers will be required to authenticate their age via the app. Once validated, users will receive 30 “porn credits” that will grant them access to explicit content. Porn credits are valid for one month.
How do “porn credits” or “tokens” work?
According to News Byte, each credit granted by the app generates a QR code.
When a user types the address of a pornographic website, a link appears that, when clicked, establishes a connection with the Digital Wallet.
The wallet will then offer the credential, which will verify the user’s age without disclosing any additional information. A user can enter the same website ten times to use one token.
How will the user’s age be verified?
- A government-issued ID will be used to verify the user’s age.
Is there a limit to the number of tokens that can be generated
- per month? Users can renew their tokens or porn credits as many times as they wish within a month.
People who have used all of their tokens, on the other hand, will be notified that their digital passport must be renewed. If people visit the websites too frequently, they are more likely to be tracked.
The system has been criticized for its complexity, but the Spanish government maintains it is more privacy-friendly and that users’ information would not be traced.
