The incident occurred on Thursday when an allegedly drunk driver lost control of the bus leading to the death of 6 teenagers with the other 21 suffering major injuries. At 8:30 am, near Kanina Women’s College in southern Haryana, a bus was attempting to overtake a truck at a bend, and overturned after colliding with a tree.
The driver, Dharmendra, escaped harm by jumping off the bus but was later apprehended, along with the principal and secretary of GL Public School, to which the bus belonged. Tragically, the bus was without an attendant at the time of the accident. The site of the accident was approximately 6km from the nearest village. Despite efforts to save them, four students lost their lives before reaching the emergency ward of a private hospital in Rewari.
Further casualties occurred during treatment, with nineteen students admitted to various private hospitals and two referred to PGI Rohtak due to deteriorating conditions. The victims from various classes included Satyam Sharma, Yuvraj, Vansh, Yashu, Ricky, and Anshu.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident, leading to his arrest along with the school officials, under multiple sections of the IPC. Additionally, it was found that the bus lacked necessary certifications and safety measures, including an expired fitness certificate, lapsed insurance, unpaid road tax, and missing safety equipment such as window grilles and a first aid box. These shortcomings underscored serious lapses in the bus’s maintenance and safety standards, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of regulations governing student vehicles.
