This southern neighboring country of India has taken important decisions for the development of bilateral relations and the development of the country’s tourism sector. On Tuesday, October 24, the cabinet approved the decision to give free visas to Indians. Apart from India, this facility will also be given to residents of China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. So far, this free visa scheme is being launched as a pilot project by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Tourism.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said on social media that this pilot project will continue until March 31, 2024. Ali Sabri writes in X Handle, “The Cabinet approves the decision to grant free visas to India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand immediately until March 31 as a pilot scheme.”
Earlier, the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister said that relations with India are very important in terms of Sri Lanka’s foreign policy. As a result of today’s decision, tourists from these countries will now get a free Sri Lankan visa. Expectedly, tourism, a significant contributor to Sri Lanka’s foreign exchange earnings, has faced challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic and political crisis in the South Asian country. This adjustment reflects the industry’s determination to recover and thrive in the face of these challenges.
