Nepali climber and mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa has etched his name in the books of mountaineering history by summiting Mount Everest an unprecedented 29 times, breaking his own record. The 54-year-old Sherpa, hailing from Thame village, has dedicated his life to mountaineering, guiding climbers to conquer not only Everest but also other daunting Himalayan peaks.
On 12 May, 2024, Kami Rita Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest at 7:25 AM (NST). He had embarked on the Spring Season Everest expedition alongside a team of roughly 28 climbers organized by Seven Summit Treks.
News of the Summit
Mingma Sherpa, a representative from Seven Summit Treks, informed AFP that Kami Rita reached the summit on Sunday morning. Officials from Nepal’s Department of Tourism also confirmed the news.
The news was met with widespread celebration, as Seven Summit Treks took to Instagram to congratulate Kami Rita, hailing him as the individual with “Most Successful Ascent of Mt. Everest by an Individual.”

Born on 2 January, 1970 in Thame village, Kami Rita Sherpa developed a deep passion for mountaineering from a young age. According to Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, CEO of 14 Peaks Expedition, where Kami Rita works as a senior guide, his journey into the world of mountaineering began in 1992 when he joined an expedition to Everest as a support staff member. Two years later, at the age of 24, he made his first historic ascent of Everest, laying the foundation for an impressive climbing journey.
Since his initial climb in 1994, Kami Rita Sherpa has spent nearly every climbing season guiding climbers to the summit of Everest. His expertise and dedication have earned him the title of “Everest Man,” becoming synonymous with the world’s highest peak. Beyond Everest, Kami Rita has also conquered other Himalayan giants, including K2, Lhotse, Manaslu and Cho Oyu.
