World leaders of over a hundred nations and organizations attended the meeting, which is taking place in Switzerland on Saturday and Sunday, aimed at charting a route to peace between warring countries Ukraine and Russia.
World leaders of more than 90 countries took part in the two-day event at the Buergenstock resort in central Switzerland aimed at uniting global opinion on how to end Moscow’s 27-month-old invasion.
However, Moscow has not sent a delegation to the summit. China has snubbed the summit, declaring that it will not attend any peace talks that do not include both Russia and Ukraine.
Zelensky expresses hope about the summit’s historic achievements and emphasizes international law-based peacemaking. He sees the meeting as an important step toward just peace under the UN Charter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dubbed the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland as a historic moment.
On the eve of a peace conference in Switzerland to which Russia has not been invited, Putin set out a series of conditions wholly at odds with the terms demanded by Ukraine. Russia’s absence underscores challenges in achieving comprehensive peace talks.
Russia did not attend the world leader’s summit of Ukraine peace
- Russia did not attend the Ukraine peace summit because it dismissed the summit as irrelevant and was unwilling to show any sign of acceptance of Ukraine’s peace formula, which it rejects.
These points were outlined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and are aimed at achieving a just conclusion to the conflict.
Ukraine’s peace formula includes several key points, such as:
- Punishing aggression
- Protecting life
- Restoring security and territorial integrity
- Guaranteeing security
- Emphasizing the importance of determination
- Russian President, Vladimir Putin, pledged on June 14 to initiate talks and enforce an instant “ceasefire” in Ukraine provided that Kyiv removed its forces from the four occupied regions of the country and abandoned its intentions to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
World leaders and organizations has shown varying responses to Ukraine’s peace formula:
- There is general support for the restoration of territorial integrity and peace in Ukraine, aligning with the UN Charter and global efforts to defend the world order based on peaceful coexistence.
- A growing number of countries are working to help set the groundwork for Russia to join the peace talks, although this is seen as a distant goal given the ongoing conflict.
- The peace formula has been presented to partners, including proposals for upgrades to the “security architecture” through legally binding multilateral and bilateral treaties.
China did not attend the world leader’s peace summit of Ukraine
China will not attend a Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland next month because it does not meet its expectations, which include both Russia and Ukraine taking part, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on May 31.
“I am appealing to the leaders of the world who are still aside from the global efforts of the Global Peace Summit — to President Biden, the leader of the United States, and to President Xi, the leader of China,” said Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
World leaders had varied responses to the Ukraine peace summit:
- US Vice President Kamala Harris and French President Emmanuel Macron were among the world leaders present to support Ukraine’s peace plan.
- European Union President Charles Michel supported Ukraine’s right to self-defense.
- Russia, which was not invited, dismissed the talks, while China did not attend, potentially affecting the summit’s impact.
The summit aimed to gather support of the world leaders for Ukraine’s proposals and seek a broader consensus for peace.
However, India and six other nations opted out of signing the joint communique, highlighting the need to involve all stakeholders, including Russia, for a successful peace process.
The summit will provide an opportunity for world leaders to issue a joint statement condemning violence and calling for a durable peace in Ukraine.
