The state government has called a special session of the legislature today to give reservation to the Maratha community under separate category.
The Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government on Tuesday approved the draft bill that proposed 10 per cent reservation for the Maratha community in education and government jobs, extending the reservation to Marathas above the 50 per cent threshold
The Supreme Court in 2021 struck down reservations for Marathas in college admissions and jobs in Maharashtra, saying that there were no exceptional circumstances to justify the breach of the 50% ceiling on overall reservations.
The report of the State Backward Classes Commission will be presented in the cabinet meeting before the commencement of the proceedings of the House this morning and the cabinet will recommend what percentage of reservation should be given to the Maratha community.
Special Session in Maharashtra Assembly
A special Assembly session in Maharashtra will be held on Tuesday wherein the lawmakers will be discussing the Maratha reservation issue.
Due to this being the first session of the new year, the session will start with the address of Governor Ramesh Bais.
The decision to convene the Maharashtra Assembly special session was prompted by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil, who had been on a hunger strike at Antarwali Saarati village in Jalna district.
However, before this special session, Manoj Jarange Patil has warned the state government , if the state government does not discuss the reservation of Sagesoyari in the special session, then there will be a terrible Maratha movement in the future.
Manoj Jarange Patil’s Hunger Strike for Reservation
Shinde has stressed that Marathas will be given reservations without disturbing the existing quota of other communities. He urged from government to Jarange end his fast, asserting that the state government is positive about giving reservation to the community.
Manoj Jarange Patil warned that after seeing this movement, the government will understand the definition of the word ‘regret’. Therefore, the question has been raised whether the special session called by the state government for the Maratha Reservation Act will not be of any use.
Manoj Jarange Patil held a press conference on Tuesday morning at Antarwali Sarati before the special session.
On this occasion, he said that the majority of the community will not benefit from the Maratha reservation bill which is about to be passed in the legislature.
Patil Bluntly said, ‘We want Maratha Reservation’
The Maratha community has been struggling for the last five-six months.
The state government has called a session for the Maratha Reservation Act, But only 150 to 200 Marathas are getting the benefit of separate reservation under this Act.
Today, the demand of crores of Marathas is to give us our reservation in the OBC category. Three and a half months ago, the government promised to pass the next of kin law for those whose Kunbi records were not found and then implement it.
“At the beginning of the special session, take up the issue of allies immediately and implement them” Manoj Jarange Patil warned. Patil said “Otherwise there will be a terrible movement of the Maratha community in the state.”
Patil Alleges Two-three people want to divide the Maratha community
Two or three people want to divide the Maratha society. Earlier reservation of SEBC category was implemented. Then there were selections of Maratha youth for jobs, but no appointments.
These boys needed a pen in their hands now, but today these boys have a weapon of agitation in their hands, their age are passing.
Even now, if the Maratha reservation is not preserved, the same will happen continuosly, give us our reservation in OBCs.
Manoj Jarange Patil demanded that those who do not have Kunbi records should be given reservation for relatives. Reservation of independent caste is detrimental to Maratha society. Are two-three people important to you or 6 crore Marathas, Jarange-Patil asked.
CM Shinde’s Cabinet Approves 10% Reservation to Maratha
Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government on Tuesday approved the draft bill that proposed 10 per cent reservation for the Maratha community in education and government jobs, extending the reservation to Marathas above the 50 per cent threshold.
Last week, the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission submitted a report on its survey on the social, economic, and educational backwardness of the Maratha community on Friday.
Following the submission of the report, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that reservation to Marathas will be given according to the terms of the law after presenting the report during the special assembly session.
Shinde said that the survey has been conducted on nearly 2-2.5 crore people.
“Keeping in mind that the OBC community is not left behind in the process, the government will present the report to the cabinet committee. On February 20, we have called a special session of the assembly, after which the Maratha reservation will be given according to the terms of the law,” the Maharashtra CM said.
Now thr cabinet gives approval for this reservation.
Patil’s appeal to MLA’s Vote for Maratha Reservation
Manoj Jarange Patil, who is agitating for Maratha reservation, appealed to the Maratha MLAs to unanimously support the reservation. If Maratha MLAs themselves do not raise their voice for reservation, they will be considered anti-Maratha.
He said that relatives should also be mentioned in the reservation. If the government does not agree to this then a new movement will be started again.
