There will be a Pawar vs Pawar fight on the Baramati Lok Sabha seat of Maharashtra after the NCP led by the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday declared Sunetra Pawar as the candidate from the Baramati Lok Sabha seat.
An electoral contest will be seen within the Pawar family on this seat as Sunetra Pawar will contest against Ajit Pawar’s cousin and Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule.
Its Pawar family Member vs Member
Sunetra Pawar will contest against Ajit Pawar’s cousin and Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule.
NCP (Ajit faction) leader Sunil Tatkare officially declared Sunetra Ajit Pawar as the candidate for Baramati Lok Sabha constituency.
Making the announcement, Tatkare stressed that the fight symbolizes a clash of ideologies rather than a family feud. After getting the ticket, Sunetra Pawar said that this is a lucky day for us.
Sunetra Pawar told a Marathi news channel that I thank Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and all the leaders of Mahayuti (Shiv Sena, BJP and NCP) for considering me capable of contesting the election. When asked about taking on Sule, she said that the voters have taken the battle in their hands.
‘Sunetra Pawar is like my mother’: Supriya Sule slams BJP over Baramati battle
Supriya Sule, Ajit Pawar’s cousin, said the duel in Lok Sabha election will not waver her respect for Sunetra Pawar as she is her “elder brother’s wife.
Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule has hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party after its ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday fielded Sunetra Pawar, wife of Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, against her from the Baramati constituency
She is alleging that it was a design of saffron party to politically finish off NCP founder Sharad Pawar.
Supriya Sule, who has won from Baramati thrice and is seeking a fourth term, faces the toughest electoral battle of her career.
Though her rival Sunetra Pawar, 60, has not contested any election so far, she has been active in social circles. She is a trustee of a reputed educational institute formed by Sharad Pawar, and is active in several other organisations.
Baramati seat is Pawar family’s stronghold
The Baramati Lok Sabha seat has been a Pawar family stronghold for over 55 years. Sharad Pawar won the Maharashtra Assembly election from Baramati for the first time in 1967.
He retained the seat in the 1972, 1978, 1980, 1985 and 1990 assembly elections. Later Supriya Sule took over and has been representing the seat since 2009. The NCP (Sharad faction), part of the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi, will contest 10 seats in Maharashtra.
Shiv Sena leader Shivtare will not contest from Baramati
Amid the NCP candidates, it is also reported that Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare has now backtracked from his announcement to contest the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from Baramati constituency in Maharashtra. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar is preparing to contest from this seat as the Mahayuti candidate.
Shivtare, a leader of the Eknath Shinde-led party, had earlier announced to contest from Baramati. But, after meeting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, both Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar together in Mumbai two days ago, he has said that he will not contest from Baramati in Pune district.
Sharad Pawar’s struggle for Candidates in LS polls to continue
With Sharad Pawar-led NCP struggling to find a candidate to contest Satara Lok Sabha seat, it has turned to senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan whom it sees as a ”strong candidate” to retain the seat that the party had won in October 2019 bypoll.
Chavan, however, said if he is asked to contest from Satara, he will do it only on Congress ticket. ”I can contest from the Satara seat provided I am fielded on a Congress ticket,” he said
The NCP (SP) has been looking for a candidate for Satara Lok Sabha seat after its sitting MP Sriniwas Patil refused to contest citing health reasons.
State NCP president Jayant Patil had met me yesterday at my residence. We discussed the Satara seat as well as some other seats,” Chavan told newspaper but refused to reveal the details of the discussion.
